Public sightings of moose
The maps at right depict the frequency of moose sightings reported to the NYS DEC each year since 2015. Note that these data likely include multiple sightings of the same moose by different people, as moose are charismatic! If you spot a moose, or take a photo of one, we'd like to know. This link will take you to the NYS DEC web site where you can report your sighting. Alternatively, use our REPORT A MOOSE! tab above to go straight to the moose reporting form. If you take any photos of moose that you'd like to share, please complete the moose sighting form. The last page details how to send photos to the team. Thank you! |
How many moose occur in the Northeast?
The map at right depicts the estimated abundance of moose across the Northeast (Wattles and Destafano 2011) as well as their recolonization history. Note that the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife reports closer to 76,000 moose roaming the state of Maine today! |
